    Black cotton yarn (weight #3) for embroidering nose, mouth, and eyebrows - 28" (70 cm)

    US 7 / 4.5 mm

    Scissors
    2-Plastic safety eyes - 14 mm
    Stuffing for toys
    Tapestry needle
    Sewing pins

  • Gauge: A 4-round gauge swatch = 3" (7.5 cm) in diameter with a US 7 / 4.5 mm hook

    Round 1: 6sc in a Magic Ring. (6 sts)
    Round 2: Inc around. (12 sts)
    Round 3: (Sc, inc)x 6. (18 sts)
    Round 4: (Sc 2, inc)x 6. (24 sts)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • dec: invisible decrease (see below)
  • inc: increase (work 2 single crochet stitches into the same stitch or space)
  • sc: single crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • (...)x # - work instructions within parentheses as many times as directed (#)
  • (# sts) - indicates the total number (#) of stitches you should have at the end of the round/row

Special Stitches

invisible decrease (dec) - insert hook in FRONT LOOP ONLY of next two stitches (which results in two more loops on hook), yarn over, pull through two loops on hook, yarn over, pull through last two loops on hook

5dc Bobble st - *yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops on hook; repeat from * four more times into the SAME stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook. Make a chain to secure all stitches

  • Unless stated otherwise, this pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round, moving it up each round.

BODY

Round 1: 8sc in a Magic Ring. (8 sts)
Round 2: Inc around. (16 sts)
Round 3: (Sc, inc)x 8. (24 sts)
Round 4: (Sc 2, inc)x 8. (32 sts)
Round 5: (Sc 3, inc)x 8. (40 sts)
Round 6: (Sc 9, inc)x 4. (44 sts)
Round 7: (Sc 5, inc, sc 5)x 4. (48 sts)
Rounds 8-18 (11 rounds): Sc 48.

Attach the eyes in Round 15, 8 sts apart.

Whiskers: Mark 2 sts in Round 14, 2 sts apart, centered between the eyes. Mark 2 sts in Round 12, 2 sts apart, creating a square with the marked sts in Round 14. With black cotton yarn, embroider an X shape, using the marked sts as a guide (see photos in downloadable PDF). Secure ends and hide them in Body

Round 19: (Sc 4, dec)x 8. (40 sts)
Round 20: (Sc 3, dec)x 8. (32 sts)
Round 21: (Sc 2, dec)x 8. (24 sts)

Stuff the Body.

Round 22: (Sc, dec)x 8. (16 sts)
Round 23: (Dec)x 8. (8 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread the yarn tail through each st of the last round and pull to close. Hide the yarn end inside the Body.

EARS

Round 1: In a Magic Ring, ch2 (counts as first dc), 3dc, ch1, 4dc. (8 dc)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing to Head.

LEGS (MAKE 4)

Using sewing pins or extra stitch markers, mark 4 sts on the underside of the Body: mark 2 sts (5 sts apart) as front legs in Round 5, and 2 sts (5 sts apart) as back legs in Round 4 (see photos).

For each leg: 
• Insert hook in the marked st and pull up a loop of yarn. 
• Ch2, make a 5dc Bobble st in the marked st (see photos next page). 
• Fasten off, leaving a long tail. 
• Using the yarn tails, secure the bobble st by sewing it at the same marked st (see photos in downloadable PDF). 
• Hide yarn ends in the Body.

ATTACHING EARS

Pin the Ears on the head from Rounds 18 to 22 of the Body.
Using the yarn tails from the Ears, sew the Ears in place.
Secure the yarn ends, then hide them inside the toy.
