    Approximately 1 ball in Beach Sand

    Black cotton yarn (weight #3) for embroidering eyebrows, nose, and mouth - 28" (70 cm)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • dec: invisible decrease (see below)
  • hdc: half double crochet

Special Stitches

LEGS (Make 2)

Round 1: 8sc in a Magic Ring. (8 sts)
Round 2: Inc around. (16 sts)
Round 3: Sc 16.
Round 4: Sc 2, (dec)x 6, sc 2. (10 sts)

Stuff the feet only.

Rounds 5-9 (5 rounds): Sc 10.

Flatten the top of the Leg, aligning opposite sts; ch1, insert hook in next 2 opposite sts and make a sc, continue making sc through both layers to close (5 sc total).

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

ARMS (Make 2)

Round 1: 6sc in a Magic Ring. (6 sts)
Round 2: (Sc 2, inc)x 2. (8 sts)
Round 3: Sc 2, (dec)x 2, sc 2. (6 sts)
Rounds 4-5 (2 rounds): Sc 6.

Flatten the top of the Arm, aligning opposite sts; ch1, insert hook in next 2 opposite sts and make a sc, continue making sc through both layers to close (3 sc total).

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

HEAD

Round 1: 8sc in a Magic Ring. (8 sts)
Round 2: Inc around. (16 sts)
Round 3: (Sc, inc)x 8. (24 sts)
Round 4: (Sc 2, inc)x 8. (32 sts)
Round 5: (Sc 7, inc)x 4. (36 sts)
Round 6: (Sc 4, inc, sc 4)x 4. (40 sts)
Rounds 7-12 (6 rounds): Sc 40.

Attach eyes in 20 and th 27th sts of Round 8.

Eyebrows: For each eyebrow, using sewing pins, mark the upper point of the eyebrow one round above the center of the eye, and the lower point 2 sts away and one round lower (see photo). With black cotton yarn, embroider the eyebrows.

Round 13: (Sc 3, dec)x 8. (32 sts)
Round 14: (Dec)x 16. (16 sts) Stuff the Head.
Round 15: (Dec)x 8. (8 sts) Do not fasten off.

Nose: Using sewing pins, mark 3 sts in Round 9, between the eyes, then mark 2 more sts, one in Round 11 and one in Round 10, directly below the first marked sts (see photo on side and next page). With black cotton yarn, embroider the nose by first making a small vertical st from Round 10 to Round 11 (see photo next page). Next, make a horizontal st in Round 9, covering all the 3 marked sts (see photo next page). Finally, make 2 sts to complete a triangle between Rounds 9 and 10, then fill it in with multiple vertical stitches (see photos on downloadable PDF).

BODY

Continue working from Head to make Body.
Round 16: (Sc, inc)x 4. (12 sts)
Round 17: (Sc 2, inc)x 4. (16 sts)
Round 18: (Sc 3, inc)x 4. (20 sts)

In the next round, you will crochet the Arms on the Body. When indicated in the pattern, with the hand of the Arm facing forwards, insert your hook in the first st of the Arm, then insert your hook in the next st of the Body, then complete a sc through both layers. Continue to sc through both layers across the Arm (3 sc total).

Note: You want the Arms to be on the sides of the Body. Adjust their position for your Bear if necessary.

Round 19: Sc 4, inc, (join first Arm) sc 3, sc, inc, sc 4, inc, (join second Arm) sc 3, sc, inc. (24 sts)
Round 20: (Sc 5, inc)x 4. (28 sts)
Round 21: (Sc 6, inc)x 4. (32 sts)
Rounds 22-24 (3 rounds): Sc 32.
Round 25: (Sc 2, dec)x 8. (24 sts)

In the next round, you will crochet the Legs on the Body. When indicated in the pattern, with the foot of the Leg facing forwards, insert your hook in the first st of the Leg, then insert your hook in the next st of the Body, then complete a sc through both layers. Continue to sc through both layers across the Leg (5 sc total).

Note: You want the Legs to be on the sides of the Body. Adjust their position for your Bear if necessary.

Round 26: Sc 5, (join first Leg) sc 5, sc 7, (join second Leg) sc 5, sc 2. (24 sts)

Stuff the Body.

Round 27: (Sc, dec)x 8. (16 sts)
Round 28: (Dec)x 8. (8 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread the yarn tail through each st of the last round and pull to close. Hide the yarn end inside the Body.

TAIL

Round 1: 6sc in a Magic Ring. (6 sts)
Round 2: (Sc 1, inc)x 3. (9 sts)
Round 3: (Sc 1, dec)x 3. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching to Body.

EARS (Make 2)

Round 1: 6hdc in a Magic Ring. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching to Head.

ATTACHING THE EARS

Using sewing pins, pin the Ears on the Head between Rounds 2 and 4.
Using the yarn tail of each Ear, sew the Ears on the Head.
Secure the yarn ends, then hide them inside the toy.

ATTACHING THE TAIL

Using sewing pins, pin the Tail to the back of the Body.
Using the yarn tail from the Tail, sew the Tail on the Body.
Secure the yarn end, then hide it inside the toy.
