What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: 
    KnitPal Cotton Alpaca Tweed (#3 DK, 60% cotton/20% alpaca/20%polyamide, 147 yds/50g), approximately 130 yds total

    Sample uses The Colorful Pack:
    Color 1: Orange Tweed
    Color 2: Red Tweed
    Color 3: Purple Tweed (brim color)
    Color 4: Green Tweed
    Color 5: Orange Tweed

  • Hook:
    US G / 4mm crochet hook
    Or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Notions: 

    Tapestry needle
    Stitch marker


Details

  • Skill Level: Easy
  • Gauge: 4" / 10 cm = 16 sts in pattern. Gauge is not crucial but will affect finished size and fabric.
  • Sizes: Circumference (body): 18 inches/46 cm
    Length: 8 inches/20.5 cm

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet Stitch: Work around the post of the stitch. Insert your hook from the front to back. Complete the double crochet stitch as normal.

Back Post Double Crochet Stitch: Work around the post of the stitch. Insert your hook from the back to front and complete the double crochet stitch as normal.



Notes

  • This hat pattern is written in a single adult size. Try adjusting the size by using a larger or smaller hook, or adding or removing rounds from your granny squares to make a child size.

  • Turning ch3 counts as a dc throughout.

  • All sts are worked in BLO

GRANNY SQUARE (make 5 using any color combination) 

BLO for every round.

Round 1: Using Color 1, MR, ch3 (counts as a dc), 11 dc in ring, sl st to join to top of first ch. Break Color 1 and join Color 2. Pull beginning tail to close the gap. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch3, dcblo in same st, 2dcblo in each st around, sl st to join. Break Color 2 and join Color 3. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch3, dcblo in same st, dcblo in next st, 2dcblo in next st, *dcblo in next st, 2dcblo in next st; repeat from * around, sl st to join. Break Color 3and join Color 4. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch3, dcblo in same st, ch1, 2dcblo in next st (corner made),

dc in next 7 sts, *in next st, 2dcblo, ch1, 2dcblo in next st, dc in next 7 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, sl st to join. Break Color 4. (44 sts)

Round 5: Join Color 5 in center of any corner, ch3, dc in same space, ch2, 2dcblo in next st (corner made), *dcblo in next 9 sts, 2dcblo in next st, ch2, 2dcblo in next st, repeat from * around, sl st to join. Break Color 5. (52 sts)

Weave in ends, block squares.

ASSEMBLY

With right sides facing, sl st two squares together along one edge, then join a third square in the same manner so there are now three in a row. Join the remaining squares on either edge of the center square. Seam the side edges of the adjacent squares together to form the hat shape.

BRIM RIBBING

Turn hat right side out. Join the brim color at any seam.

Round 1: Ch2 (counts as first dc), dc around, sl st to top of ch to join.

Round 2: Ch2, dc in first st, *FPDC, BPDC; repeat from * around, sl st to join.

Round 3: Repeat Round 2. Fasten off and weave in ends.
