How to Set Up a Crochet & Knitting Club to Meet Other College Students

While your freshman year of college can be an exciting time, it can also be overwhelming. If you attended a high school with a small student body, it may be a bit of a shock to attend a school with thousands of students. The good news is that because there are so many students, there are numerous opportunities to meet people with your interests.

One way to start meeting people is by joining or setting up a club on campus. If you are into knitting or crocheting, consider starting a club where you can meet other students with your interests. Here are some steps to get started.

How to Set Up a Crochet & Knitting Club to Meet Other College Students

  1. Contact the Right People

You’ll want to contact your school’s student activity office. Every college has a different name for this office, but you may need to contact the Office of Student Engagements or the Office of Student Organizations. The people working in these departments can give you information on how to set up your club. Some offices will even help you advertise or provide information about your club in their emails/newsletters.

If they don’t help with advertising, you’ll need to find out about any rules and regulations to promote the club yourself. For instance, if there is a bulletin board in your dorm’s hallway, you may need to get permission from your resident adviser (R.A.) to place flyers there.

  1. Get the Word Out

Make sure that your flyers answer the 5 W’s: who, what, where, when, and why. To keep more people coming, try to create a set time and place for your club to meet so people can drop in on weeks they are free. If you don’t have a lot of people showing up the first time around, don’t be discouraged. It may take some time to build up awareness for your club.

Besides advertising through college resources and your own efforts, don’t forget about a web presence. Set up a knitting group on social media like Facebook to garner interest. You could also set up a group on MeetUp, an online service where you can find other people with your interests. Even if you aren’t tech-savvy, you can use an open-source blogging site, like Wordpress, to list FAQs about your club.

  1. Emphasize the Value of this Club to Your Peers

While the social aspect may be the biggest draw in your club’s advertisements, don’t forget to highlight other benefits of this club to the student population.

According to one study, 63% of college students felt anxiety and were vulnerable to mental health issues. One way to combat anxiety and depression was by participating in creative outlets, like knitting and crocheting. For example, a survey conducted by Cardiff University found that people who knit frequently felt calmer and happier.

Although college life can get busy, a little knitting/crocheting can work wonders and be almost meditative. These creative activities may help students who may be struggling with stress in their life. Other studies have showed positive outcomes from knitting, such as:

  • Improved self esteem and sense of accomplishment
  • Reduced symptoms in people with chronic pain
  • Improved health since knitting groups sustain a person’s social contacts
  • Improved brain function

As you can see, there’s a lot of great research that supports the benefits of knitting. So be sure to highlight these benefits so that more people become interested in your club.

  1. Choose a Fun Activity to Get Started

One fun activity that you could do is crochet or knit scarves/hats in college colors. If you want to show your school spirit at sporting events, you should wear these college color garments to games. Sporting events, like college football, are great opportunities to meet new friends. If your club members wear the scarves and hats to games, you may receive compliments; and, other students may be interested in learning how to make these items at future club nights.
