The Animal Alphabet is a whimsical crochet collection that turns every letter from A to Z into an adorable stuffed animal, blending learning, creativity, and handmade charm into one joyful project. Designed by Linda Richard, each letter features a unique animal character—from Alligator to Zebra—constructed with soft texture, playful details, and light stuffing to create tactile, kid-friendly pieces. Crocheted using KnitPal Woolen Delights and Off-The-Yak yarns, this intermediate-level pattern is perfect for educational décor, nursery displays, classroom learning tools, or heartfelt handmade gifts that spark imagination and fun.

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: 

    KnitPal Woolen Delights (40% Australian wool, 40% Acrylic, 20% Polyamide, 174yds (159m) per 100g skein)

    KnitPal Off The Yak (25% yak, 50% wool, 25% acrylic, 120yds (110m) per 100g skein)

    Shown in Woolen Delights colorways Mint Green, Forest Green, Charcoal Gray, Bright Yellow, Bubblegum Pink, Brown Coffee, Black Onyx, Snow White, Pumpkin Orange, Purple Amethyst and Wheat Beige and Off-The-Yak colourways Black Ink and Light Gray.

    The entire set uses approximately 2 skeins of White and 1 skein each of the other colorways listed.

  • Skill Level: Intermediate

  • Gauge: 9 sts = 4“ / 10 cm in single crochet. Gauge is not crucial for this project.

  • Measurements: Working at the suggested gauge will produce letters approximately 8” / 20 cm tall.

  • ch: chain
  • dec: decrease (work 2 stitches together)
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • inc: increase (work 2 stitches into the same stitch/space)

    Construction Notes

    • It is recommended to block your pieces before assembling. For each letter, we will create two layers and sc them together, stuffing with fiberfill as we work our way around the edges. Work an increase (sc twice into the same stitch) or decrease (work 2 stitches together) to curve around the corners of the letter.

    Row 1: Sc1 in same st as join. In next st, *(sc, ch 2, slst in 2nd ch, sc in same st), sl st 3*. Repeat from *to * until you reach the head, as pictured. Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Fun Fact: The largest alligator ever measured was 15 feet, nine inches long and weighed in at 1,011.5 pounds.

    Fasten off leaving a tail to sew to letter C.

    Ears – Light Gray – Make 2

    With yarn needle and a length of Black yarn, make a small triangle for nose and fill in the triangle. Make a straight down from center of nose, and 2 straight sts for smile.

    Ears – Black

    Ch6, hdc in next 3 ch, sc in last 2 ch. (5)
    Fasten off, leaving a tail and sew to head.

    Tail – Black

    Cut several lengths of beige yarn and attach fringe for mane and tail.

    Crochet letter Y with yak features

    Letter Y Vertical – Brown – Make 2

    Row 1: Ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (4)
    Rows 2-8: Sc across, ch1, turn. (4)
    Row 9: Sc across.
    Attach 9 mm eyes in Brown vertical, Row 8, 2 sts apart. Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Letter Y Bars – Beige – Make 4

    Row 1: Ch4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (3)
    Rows 2-7: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (3)
    Row 8: Dec, sc, ch 1, turn. (2)
    Row 9: Dec, ch 1, turn. (1)
    Row 10: Sc. (1)
    Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Finishing

    Sew one set of the Y bars together at an angle.
    Outline horns with a long length of brown yarn before sewing them to the vertical Y.
    This will be the front of Y.
    Sew other set of bars together at an angle.
    Sew Y bars to verticals forming Y.
    Layer letters together and sc around head with brown, and horns with beige, stuffing lightly as you work.

    Hair - Brown

    Cut a few lengths of brown yarn for hair. Attach strands to inner joint of bars in center. Fold them forward and trim.

    Nose - Beige

    Ch5, 3sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc3, 3sc in last st.Turn to work on other side of ch, sc across, join.
    Fasten off, leaving a tail. With yarn needle and a length of Brown, make tiny sts for nostrils.

    Fun Fact: Yaks are a close relative of buffalo and bison.

     



    Z IS FOR ZEBRA

    Letter Z Top Bars – White – Make 2

    Row 1: Ch12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, ch 1, turn. (11)
    Row 2: Sc across, ch 1, turn. (11)
    Row 3: Sc across.
    Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Bottom and Center Bars – White – Make 2

    Row 1: Ch12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, ch 1, turn. (11)
    Row 2: Sc across, ch1, turn. (11)
    Row 3: Sc across, ch1, turn. (11)
    Row 4: Dec, sc 1, sc inc, ch1, turn. (4)
    Row 5: Sc inc, sc, decrease, ch1, turn. (4)
    Row 6: Dec, sc, sc inc, ch1, turn. (4)

    Finishing

    With bottom and center bars at an angle, sew bars to top to form a Z.
    Layer letters together and sc around, stuffing lightly as you work.

    Zebra Ear – Black, White

    Round 1: Using Black and Magic Ring, ch1, 6sc in ring. Break white, join black. (6)
    Round 2: Sc1, (hdc, ch2, sl st in 2nd ch, hdc) all in same stitch*, sc around, join. Fasten off.
    Sew to top right of letter Z.

    Muzzle – Black

    Round 1: Using Magic Ring, ch1, 6sc in ring. (6)
    Round 2: Sc inc around. (12)
    Fasten off, leaving a tail and sew to letter Z.

    Eye – Black

    For an eye, make straight sts just below the ear.

    Mane – Black

    Cut several lengths of black and attach as fringe to left side of ear and just below ear.

    Stripes – Black

    Make several ch and tack to letter Z for stripes.

    Fun Fact: Zebras can sleep while standing up.
