Free Patterns for the Crochet Bobble Stitch

Adorable, textured, fun stitch for any crochet lover!

The bobble stitch is also commonly known as the popcorn stitch or as a puff stitch. It is a super easy stitch to learn once you know a few basic steps. A double crochet and single crochet are crucial to the bobble stitch. This would be a great stitch to add to your go-to library of favorite crochet stitches. It can be used in a wide variety of patterns including baby blankets, scarves, pillows, and many more!

Teach me how to Bobble

A common abbreviation for the bobble stitch is 5DCTOG. This abbreviation stands for 5 double crochets that are then crocheted together at the end. Meaning when you are doing the five double crochets you do not finish them but leave them on your hook. You then pull through all five stitches together at the end. This is what forms the bobble. It pulls the yarn together and creates a semi-sphere that will pop up from the rest of your project.

yo: yarn over

5DCTOG: Start with a yo. Then insert the hook into the specified stitch, yo again and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (this counts are your first incomplete double crochet) *yo, insert the hook into the same stitch as before, yo, pull up the loop, yo again and up through 2 loops* repeat from (* to *) 3 more times. You should now have 6 loops on your hook. Yo once more and then pull through all 6 of the loops on your hook.

Special Notes for the Bobble Stitch

  • The bobble stitch is not always made with five double crochets. It can also be made with three or four.
  • The bobble stitch is always worked into one stitch. Therefore, usually, the next stitch is skipped in the pattern.
  • When a half double crochet is used instead of a full double crochet this stitch is called a puff stitch, not a bobble stitch.
  • The bobble stitch is a great stitch to create pictures within a pattern or even spell out words and names.
