Notes

  • Turning ch does not count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated
  • You will be working in Spiral Rounds. This means that you will never be “joining” the old round to the new round in the traditional way of slip stitch and chain to reach a height for the next round. Instead, you will simply continue as established in pattern until the length is reached and then use a slip stitch to end the spiral. It is recommended to have a movable stitch marker to help keep track of how many rounds you have completed, if you are not comfortable with“eyeballing it”.

FSC 60 (70, 75, 80), ch 1, turn.

Round 1: sc in first st, ch1, sk 1, *sc in next st, ch1, sk 1; rep from * to end.

Do Not Turn. Being careful not to twist your work, make a circle so that the first stitch is next to your last stitch. Join the ends by skipping the first sc and working your next sc into the ch-1 space, ch 1, sk 1. From this point forward, you will always be skipping the sc of the previous round and working into the ch-1 space.

Continue in pattern as *sc in next sp, ch 1,sk 1, until you have completed 28 (33, 33,36) rounds. Join with sl st into next ch-1 spand fasten off, leaving a 12-inch / 30 cm tail.

Thread the tail into the tapestry needle and weave in and out between the sc of the last round. Gently pull the tail to gather together the stitches to make the crown. Do not pull too tightly as you do this, or you might break your yarn. Close the gap as much as possible. It may take a few times of adjusting the gathering to get it closed “almost” completely. Once gathered, thread through a stitch and tie off your yarn.

FINISHING

Top of hat with pompom of crochet chain loops

Turn hat inside out. Attach your remaining yarn at any point within the gathered ring, using a sl st. Tightly ch 20, use a sl st to connect to the gathered ring slightly over from the last connection. Repeat around the gathered ring to form loops, and once you reach the first chain loop, connect again with sl st, fasten off and break yarn. The pictured completed sample hat has 15 loops on the crown. It's your choice how many loops to add to your hat.
