Granny Square Fingerless Mitts - Free Pattern

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: 
    KnitPal Cotton Alpaca Tweed (#3 DK, 60% cotton/20% alpaca/20%polyamide, 147 yds/50g), approximately 100 yds total

    Sample uses The Colorful Pack:
    MC: Green Tweed
    CC: Orange Tweed

  • Hook:
    US G / 4mm crochet hook
    Or size needed to obtain gauge

  • Notions: 

    Tapestry needle
    Stitch markers

  • Skill Level: Easy
  • Gauge: 4" / 10 cm = 16 sts in pattern. Gauge is not crucial but will affect finished size and fabric.
  • Sizes: Length: 6.5"/16.5 cm

    Hand circumference: 8"/20.5 cm

  • BLO: back loop only
  • CC: contrast color
  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • MC: main color
  • MR: magic ring

Notes

  • These mitts are written in a single adult size. Try adjusting the size by using a larger or smaller hook, or adding or removing rounds from your granny squares to make a child size.

  • Turning ch3 counts as a dc throughout.


Pattern

GRANNY SQUARE (make 4)

Round 1: Using MC, MR, ch3 (counts as a dc), 11 dc in ring, sl st to join to top of ch. Pull beginning tail to close the center. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch3, dcblo in same st, 2dcblo in each st around, sl st to join. Break MC and attach CC. (24 sts)

Round 3: Using CC, ch3, dc in same st, dc in next st, 2dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around, sl st to join. (36 sts)

Round 4: ch4, dc in same st, ch 1, 2dc in next st (corner made), dc in next 7sts, *in next st, 2dc, ch 1, 2dc in next st, dc in next 7 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, sl st to join. Break CC. (44 sts)

Round 5: Join MC in center of any corner, ch3, dc in same space, ch2, 2dc in next st (corner made), *dc in next 9 sts, 2dc in next st, ch 2, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around, sl st to join. Break MC. (52 sts)

Weave in ends. Block squares.

ASSEMBLY

Fingerless mitt assembly

With right sides together sew or sl st 2squares together along one side. 

On opposite side, join squares together, sew or sl st 4 sts from the top corner downwards, through both layers to join squares. Sew or sl st 4 sts from the bottom corner upward, through both layers to join squares. The opening will be for the thumb. Turn piece right side out to finish cuff, top of hand, and thumb.

WRIST CUFF

Round 1: Join MC at a side seam on glove, ch2, scblo around.

Rounds 2-6: scblo around. Break yarn.

Repeat for 2nd glove.

TOP OF GLOVE

Round 1: Join CC at a side seam at top of glove, ch2, scblo around.

Round 2: scblo around. Break yarn.

Repeat for 2nd glove.

THUMB

Round 1: Join MC to bottom opening stof thumb, ch2, scblo in sts around opening.

Round 2: scblo around, sl st to join. Break yarn.

Repeat for 2nd glove.
